What we found, what we did, and why

Your concern: Truck shifts hard between 3rd and 4th and the "wrench" light came on near Brasstown Bald last Sunday.

What we found: Your truck has the 10R80 ten-speed transmission Ford put in '17–'22 F-150s. We pulled three live trouble codes (P0732, P0746, and one stored P2723), put it on the road, then on the scope. The shift-solenoid pack is electrically sloppy — the signals to the valve body are not what the computer expects, which is what was causing the hard shift. The fluid we pulled was darker than it should be at 42k miles, with metal-fines, telling us the clutches are starting to wear from running with bad shift commands.

What we'll do: Replace the internal solenoid pack with the OEM-spec part. Service the valve body and inspect the internal harness for chafe (common failure point on the 10R80). Drop and refill with Mercon LV — the only fluid spec'd for your transmission. Run a TCM relearn so the computer matches the new solenoids. Then we'll road-test until we see clean upshifts at every gear under load.

Why now and not later: If you keep driving it like this, the metal-fines in the fluid will reach the clutches, and what's a solenoid-pack job today turns into a $4,000–$6,000 rebuild within 3–6 months. The hot-fluid flush we'll do with our GTECH machine (no charge, included) is what most shops skip and what most Honda/Ford/GM dealers require for their own warranty.

Phase note: If we open it up and find the valve body is worse than the scope suggested, or the harness is fried, we'll stop, call you, and quote Phase 2 before any extra time goes on the clock. You only ever pay for work you've approved.
